Walking Anglesey for children with Cancer

This July (14th -27th) I shall be walking the whole 125miles of the Anglesey Coastal Path, to raise money for the charity LATCH which works to help children with cancer or leukaemia in Wales.

Many of you who already know me are aware that last year my sister was diagnosed with the cancer Osteosarcoma in her leg.

As you can imagine the news was huge shock to us as a family, and over the following months our lives were transformed. Since the diagnosis we have more or less been living at the hospital where my sister has been receiving her treatment.

As we live in Cardiff, we're lucky that that hospital was the Heath, the site for the new Children's Hospital for Wales. When I was still at high school (Ysgol Glantaf) there would often be fundraising events in aid of the setting up of the hospital. It was a strange feeling thinking of all those times and seeing how the money had been spent.

I'd like to take this chance to thank all the staff who have been, and continue to be so much help to us as a family.

As I write this (the start of May) my sister is still receiving Chemo treatment and we are still spending more time at the hospital than anywhere else. But by the time I start my walk the Chemo should have finished, but that won't be the end of the treatment or the relationship with the hospital. Every time she'll need to see a GP or even a dentist over the next two years she'll have to return to the Heath. Therefore it's obvious how important it is to us that the staff have everything they need to give her the best possible treatment. But it is also important to remember that my sister is only one example of the many children who are treated on the ward every day. And even though the government should be able to give these children every fighting chance by providing the best equipment/staff/medicine this is not the reality because of budgetary limitations.

This is why I have decided to raise money through the charity LATCH specifically for the medical work that's done on the oncology ward of the Children's Hospital for Wales.

LATCH was established over a quarter of a century ago to help children with Cancer or Leukaemia. Every child in South Wales suffering of this illness will be seen to at the Children's Hospital for Wales in the Heath. Because of our experiences we have decided that we'd like to see the money I collect spent on new equipment, to help fund additional members of staff or cancer research. But LATCH's work is much broader than this, they give a lot of practical support to the families who are affected by the illness. If you would like more information about the work the charity does go to www.latchwales.org.
